Libra is a cardinal sign, representing initiative and leadership. Libra season guides the seasonal wheel to Autumn, a time when day equalizes with night, darkness and light are in balance. The Equinox brings us into Libra season, and Autumn in the northern hemisphere. In the element of air, the cardinal (initiatory) energy of Libra invokes and inspires the qualities of thoughtful, diplomatic, inclusive, and justice-oriented decisions and harmony seeking vibes. Because Libra is ruled by the planet Venus, and is a sign within the triplicity of air, there is an emphasis on beauty, style, and pleasures. There is also a collective instinct to experience wonder, gratitude and a body/mind/spirit reset.

 The twelve zodiac signs are divided into two parts, the first six are more self-oriented and the latter six are oriented outward, representing connection with the greater world. Libra is the first of these more expansive and depth-oriented signs. Represented by an object, rather than a person or animal, the scales of Justice conceptualize moving beyond the instincts of the body and feelings into the realm of ideas and rational laws.

 In Libra, the instinct is to bring our mental consciousness into the alignment of balance, into the beauty of reason and rationality, to equalize our beings and realign with nature. This focus on aesthetic pleasure and our planet’s harmony is evident all around us as the leaves and foliage richen in color, creating a visual orchestra of golds and reds. The ground becomes carpeted with glossy chestnuts, seeds and pods as nature lets go of her final gifts, the seeds of rebirth, before the hibernation and death of Winter.

 Libra is the opposite sign of Aries as Autumn is opposite Spring. Within these oppositions we also have the polar energies of Venus and Mars. In the Spring, the fiery energy of Mars motivates the cardinal energy of Aries to push new growth and blossoms through the most naked of branches and icy frozen ground. It is the way of the warrior, the battle to be born again from the chill of winter death. To be born is one of the greatest physical struggles of one’s life, to come into the world is challenging and to grow while cultivating the necessary optimism and curiosity is an ongoing journey. We must bravely face whatever our life entails and keep going.

 In Autumn, cooling Venus and the cardinal Libra energy bring balance to birth, the way of the warrior—with maturity, the way of partnership. Through life, we learn the way of Love, and the importance of diplomacy and balance. We instinctively learn to blend Venus with Mars so there is a harmony between innocence and maturity.  This is the slow, beautiful, reflective aging process ultimately leading to decay. What would the miraculous battle of birth and the life unfolding from it be without a chance to deepen, in richness and color, to become gilded in the wisdom of your life, to find balance through experience and to finally rest, in the full beauty of Love.

 One of my favorite connections of Libra goes beyond ancient civilizations and cultures and correlates to sacred geometry leading a path to the ultimate law of the universe, Love. This is reflected in the infinite cycles of Venus and the sun which reflect Golden ratio of phi (1.618). Phi is the mathematical principle that governs the shape of galaxies and spirals, and the structure of DNA and how plants grow. It is essentially the formula of divine order and beauty.

 Principles of sacred geometry and cosmic harmony connect this Venus ruled season and the sign of Libra to intrinsic aesthetic wisdom and brilliance.

 The Tarot Card associated with Libra is the Justice card. In tarot, the justice card symbolizes accountability, fairness, justice, and objectivity. It is related to the Taoist principle of karma.
